How Many Movers Do I Need? A Crew Size Guide for NYC Moves
Most New York moves need two to four movers. A studio or one-bedroom runs fine with two, a two or three-bedroom usually wants three, and anything four bedrooms or larger needs four or more. Your building decides the rest, because a fifth-floor walk-up and a doorman building with a freight elevator are not the same job even when the apartment is identical.
Here is how to size your crew properly, and why guessing low costs more than booking right.
How Many Movers Do I Need by Apartment Size
Start here, then adjust for your building using the sections below.
| Home Size | Movers | Typical Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Studio | 2 | 2 to 3 |
| 1 bedroom | 2 | 2 to 3 |
| 2 bedroom | 2 to 3 | 3 to 5 |
| 3 bedroom | 3 | 4 to 6 |
| 4 bedroom or larger | 4 or more | 5 to 8 |
Treat the hours as a working estimate rather than a promise. A lightly furnished three-bedroom can finish faster than a two-bedroom with a storage unit in the basement and a decade of accumulated boxes.
Nearly every company books a two-mover minimum, usually with a two or three-hour floor, so a very small job will not come in under that no matter how little you own.
How Many Movers Do I Need for a Studio or One-Bedroom
Two movers handle almost every studio and one-bedroom in the city. One works the truck, one works the apartment, and they trade off on the heavy pieces.
Consider a third when any of these apply:
- You are in a walk-up above the third floor
- You own a sleeper sofa, a full-size fridge, or a Peloton
- Your building gives you a tight elevator window you have to hit
- You have more than about 30 boxes still to carry
- The truck cannot park within a reasonable distance of your door
A third mover on a small job sounds like overspending until the crew misses a two-hour freight elevator window and the building makes you reschedule. See our apartment moving and small moves services for how we staff these.
How Many Movers Do I Need for a Two or Three-Bedroom
Three is the working answer for most two and three-bedroom apartments in New York.
Two movers can do a two-bedroom, and they will take noticeably longer. Since NYC moves are billed by the hour for local jobs, slower often cancels out whatever you saved on the smaller crew. Three movers on a four-hour job frequently costs about the same as two movers on a six-hour one, and you get your evening back.
Three-bedroom apartments almost always want three. Beyond the volume, there are usually multiple beds to break down, a dining set, and a kitchen that takes real time to clear.
How Many Movers Do I Need for Four Bedrooms or More
Four movers minimum, and five is reasonable for a townhouse or a large brownstone floor-through.
At this size the limiting factor stops being lifting and becomes flow. Two movers wrapping and staging while two run the truck keeps everyone productive. Drop to three and the crew spends half the day waiting on each other. Our house moving service covers these.
What New York Adds to the Equation
Crew size in this city is decided as much by the building as by the apartment.
Walk-ups
Stairs mostly add time rather than movers, and above the third floor they add a lot of it. Every box goes up or down on someone’s shoulder. A fourth or fifth-floor walk-up is the single most common reason we recommend one extra mover on a small apartment.
Elevator buildings
Most doorman and co-op buildings assign a freight elevator window, often a three or four-hour weekday block, and many ban weekend moves outright. Under standard Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) residential lease riders and building house rules, that window is a strict deadline. Crew size is how you hit it. Most buildings also require a certificate of insurance from your mover before they will let the crew in at all.
Parking and long carries
New York rarely gives you a spot at the door. Due to strict NYC DOT commercial vehicle parking regulations, trucks often have to park half a block away or across the street, making every trip longer. A carry beyond roughly 75 feet is where companies start calling it a long carry, and where an extra set of hands starts paying for itself.
Heavy and Specialty Items Change the Math
Some items set the crew size regardless of apartment size.
| Item | Movers Needed |
|---|---|
| Full-size appliances | 2 to 3 |
| Anything 300 to 400 lbs | 3 |
| Upright or baby grand piano | 3 to 4 |
| Floor safe or gun safe | 4 |
| Pool table | 3 to 4, plus disassembly |
Flag these when you book. A crew sized for a one-bedroom that arrives to find a piano cannot safely move it, and the job stops there.
Does an Extra Mover Cost More
Per hour, yes. Over the whole job, often not.
Adding a mover raises the hourly rate and shortens the clock. Whether you come out ahead depends on how much of the work is carrying, which is exactly where a bigger crew helps most. The jobs where a third mover reliably pays for itself are walk-ups, long carries, tight elevator windows, and anything with a heavy specialty item.
The jobs where it genuinely does not are small, ground-floor, elevator-to-elevator moves with everything already boxed. Our guide to NYC moving costs breaks the pricing down further.
How to Get the Crew Size Right
Tell your mover these six things and the estimate will be accurate:
- Apartment size and roughly how many boxes you will have
- Your floor, and whether there is an elevator or stairs
- Whether the elevator is a freight elevator and what window you have
- How far the truck can realistically park from your door
- Any item over about 200 pounds
- Whether you are packing yourself or want packing help
Leave out the walk-up and the job runs long. Leave out the piano and it does not move at all.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many movers do I need for a 1 bedroom apartment?
Two in most cases, finishing in two to three hours. Add a third if you are above the third floor in a walk-up, own a sleeper sofa or large appliance, or face a tight elevator window.
How many movers do I need for a 2 bedroom apartment?
Two to three. Three is usually the better value in New York, because the hourly billing means a faster crew often costs about the same overall.
How many movers do I need for a 3 bedroom house?
Three, running four to six hours for a local move. Add a fourth for a basement, a garage, or a long carry to the truck.
How long does it take 2 movers to move a 1 bedroom apartment?
Two to three hours for a local move with everything packed. Stairs, parking distance, and unpacked boxes are what push it longer.
Is it cheaper to hire 2 movers or 3?
Two costs less per hour and three often costs less in total, since the job finishes sooner. On walk-ups and long carries, three is almost always cheaper overall.
Do I need to help the movers?
No. Our crews handle the lift. The most useful thing you can do is be finished packing before they arrive and be reachable for questions about where things go.
What happens if I book too few movers?
The job runs past its estimate, and in an elevator building you risk missing your reserved window, which can force a reschedule and a second building fee.
