Greenwich Village is a bustling neighborhood located in downtown Manhattan. This neighborhood has seen its fair share of history from the modern LGBT movement to the birthplace of both the Beat Generation and counterculture of the 1960s. In the past, it was also considered an artists’ haven and bohemian capital, but nowadays it attracts young couples and professionals due to its charming brownstone buildings and amazing nightlife and restaurants.

Our Top Greenwich Village Moving Tips
Cost of Living
Greenwich Village is one of the most sought after neighborhoods in Manhattan and the rents reflect that. You can expect to pay around $5,000 a month for a one-bedroom, though you might be able to find more affordable rents if you move during the winter months. There are still a decent amount of rent stabilized apartments in the area, so keep an eye out! If you plan on buying, expect to pay around $1.4 million for a home or around $500,000 for an apartment in a co-op.
Transportation
You have almost every major train line in Greenwich Village including the A, C, E, B, D, F, M, and 1, 2, 3. You also have access to the PATH train if you want to hop over to Hoboken. Walk a bit further east and you can take the N, R and 6 trains. There are also plenty of bus stops and, if all else fails, you can walk around the historic neighborhood.
Crime and Safety
At first glance, Greenwich Village might seem like it has higher crime than the rest of Manhattan, but that is because of the hither incidents of property crime. When it comes to violent crime, Greenwich Village’s crime rates are almost half that of NYC as a whole. The neighborhood is protected by one policy precinct, two fire stations, and there are multiple hospitals and urgent care locations to go to if you get hurt.
What to Do and See
A better question might be what is there NOT to do or see in the West Village. It’s a perfect place for every demographic. There are plenty of bars and clubs for people who want an exciting night life. If you also happen to like jazz you can listen to some local and famous musicians at the Blue Note Jazz Club or Village Vanguard. Want to get a drink at a historic bar? Go to the Stonewall Inn, a LGBT landmark as it was the site of a huge right against police violence in 1969. After that, catch a move at the IFC Center or play some board games with some friends at The Uncommons.
When it comes to food, there are so many choices, you probably won’t be able to get to them all! Some of the more iconic locations include Mamoun’s Falafel, a Middle Eastern restaurant that has been serving the neighborhood since 1971. There’s also Minetta Tavern, famous for its strip steak and what used to be the most expensive burger in NYC. If you prefer dining in the comfort of your apartment, you might want to stock it up with some tea and spices from Sullivan Street Tea & Spice Company and maybe pick up some exotic meats at Ottomanelli & Sons Prime Meats.
