Former home to Freedomland USA, Baychester is located in the northeastern section of The Bronx flanked by Co-op City and Williamsbridge. If you end up living here, you’ll almost forget that you’re living in NYC and not a suburb of the city. The majority of residents own their home, which is evident by the many one and two family homes of various styles, though there are some apartment complexes. When you live in Baychester you can enjoy beautiful tree-lined streets, open green spaces, and more. It’s a nice escape from the busy hum of Manhattan!

Our Top Baychester Moving Tips
Cost of Living
Compared to other parts of Queens, Astoria’s rents and home prices are a bit on the higher side. This should come as no surprise considering all of the amenities and the continued influx of renters from Manhattan. Expect rent to be around $2,800 for a one-bedroom apartment. If you want to own your place, then prepare to pay around $750,000 for a home. It might sound expensive to other parts of the country, but compared to the rest of NYC, these prices are reasonable.
Transportation
There’s plenty of ways to get around. You can find a bus that will take you to different parts of the Bronx, Manhattan, and even Westchester. Otherwise, hop on the 5 train if you want to get to Manhattan or Brooklyn.
Crime and Safety
Baychester’s crime rates are higher than the city as a whole, but it’s still quite safe especially during the day and after work. Much like other parts of the city, it can be dangerous late at night so try to avoid getting home too late!
What to Do and See
The bay in Baychester refers to the nearby Hutchinson River Bay. You can admire some views of the bay along the waterfront park. If you actually want to go swimming though, head to Haffen Park as it has an outdoor pool for adults and kids. If swimming isn’t your thing, you can play some basketball at one of the courts or play some tennis with some friends. Otherwise, head over to Seton Falls Park (just outside of Baychester) where you can enjoy beautiful waterfalls, streams, and green trails.
While a mostly residential neighborhood, Baychester is home to Bay Plaza, a large shopping complex where you can eat, shop, and enjoy some entertainment. The mall also holds a variety of events including fashion shows, local artist features, Christmas events, and more! If you don’t mind heading outside of Baychester, head over Hutchinson River Parkway and explore Pelham Bay Park, which is New York City’s largest park complete with riding trails, a golf course, beaches, and more!
