No, you didn’t read that wrong. There is a neighborhood in Manhattan called Manhattanville. Also known as West Harlem or West Central Harlem, this neighborhood has seen huge changes from the 2000s onwards. It has undergone a series of revitalization and development efforts to make it safer and more attractive to residents. The neighborhood now provides an interesting mix of old and new with modern buildings right next to old brownstones. There’s plenty to do and see here whether you like shopping, eating, or wandering around.

We at NYC Great Movers can make your transition to Manhattanville easy and stress-free. Our basic moving service provides loading and unloading of the truck, basic disassembly of furniture, and even packing some items like glass tables, art work, and more. We have all the appropriate licenses and insurance, which means we can provide your landlords or building managers with a certificate of insurance in case they require it. If you require more help, just let us know and we’ll work with you to find the best moving solution for your needs.

Our Top Moving Tips

Our Top Manhattanville Moving Tips

Cost of Living

Despite all the changes, Manhattanville remains one of the more affordable neighborhoods in Manhattan as you can still find plenty of one-bedroom apartments for $2,500. You may even be able to snag a rent stabilized apartment if you’re lucky!

Transportation

You won’t be wanting for subway access if you live in Manhattanville. Almost every train line on the west side stops at 125 street, which means you can easily hop on the A, B, C, D, and 1 trains. On top of that, there are plenty of buses to take you to other areas of Manhattan and the Bronx.

Crime and Safety

There is so much to explore in Manhattanville. Whether you’re religious or not, head to Riverside Church head to St. Mary’s Protestant Episcopal Church on 126th. Its unassuming looks is in contrast to its history as it was the first church in Harlem. Built in 1824 and consecrated in 1826, it is the oldest congregation in continuous service in all of Harlem and was designated a New York City landmark back in 1998. For more history, check out the former Claremont Theater where Thomas Edison shot a short film in 1915. Want some fresh air? Head over to West Harlem Piers for a nice walk along the water, fishing, or kayaking.

When it comes to food, you definitely have to stop by the original Dinosaur Bar-B-Que for some amazing barbecue. While you’re there, make sure to buy a bottle of their famous sauce! If that’s not your thing, why not check out the many small mom and pop restaurants that service a variety of culinary options from Chinese to Cuban to Japanese. There’s something for everyone here.

What to Do and See

Who says Queens doesn’t have anything interesting? Astoria is chock full of amenities. In fact, you don’t even need to head into Manhattan to experience the energy of NYC. Go to Astoria Park, a 60 acre greenspace along the East River, for a relaxing stroll along the water or bring your swimsuit and enjoy the Olympic-sized public outdoor pool. If you’re not a swimmer, there’s plenty to do as the park boasts tennis courts, track, bandstand, basketball courts, and more. Smaller parks are scattered around the neighborhood including Athens Square Park, which often hosts live music during the summer months.

Astoria is also a great place for foodies. The neighborhood has historically had a large Greek and Middle Eastern population though recently it has become more of a melting pot. Still, you can enjoy some authentic Greek cuisine at Amylos Tavern or Agnanti. If you’re more in the mood for Middle Eastern fare, then check out Merguez & Frites, an Algerian restaurant, or Zyara Restaurant for traditional Middle Eastern Fare. For dessert check out La Guli Pastry Shop, which has been serving Italian sweets in Astoria since 1937.
