Our Top Gowanus Moving Tips
Cost of Living
Gowanus has seen a huge variance in its housing costs for a variety of reasons, but most recently due to it being named a superfund back in 2020. Luckily, completion of the site was done in 2024, but prices have remained variable. You can easily find an apartment for as little as $1,700 to as much as $3,200. If you want to buy, expect to pay at least $1.4 million.
Transportation
Getting around is pretty easy in Gowanus. You can hop on the F and G lines located directly over the Gowanus Canal. Or walk a bit further and catch the R train. There’s also several bus lines that will take you around Brooklyn and plenty of bike routes and Citibike docking stations if you prefer to peddle yourself.
Crime and Safety
In general, Gowanus is quite safe with levels of violent crime below city rates as a whole. Still, there are burglaries and thefts that occur, mostly from local businesses, but you should still be alert and aware of your surroundings. The area is served by one police station and two fire departments.
What to Do and See
You’ll have plenty of activities to enjoy when you move to Gowanus. Of course, you should enjoy a nice stroll along the Gowanus Canal or rent a canoe or kayak for a unique view of the neighborhood. If you prefer to stay on land, enjoy a seat at the Gowanus Waterfront Park for a relaxing view of the canal and the neighborhood. Or if you prefer to ride a bike along the waterfront, check out the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. For those looking for something even more relaxing, why not watch some movies outdoors with Rooftop Films?
There’s no shortage of restaurants or bars to enjoy in Gowanus. Check out 16 Mill Bakery for some delicious gluten-free treats. After that, try out Surfish Bistro for some ceviche or Sweet Talk for a Hawaiian/East-Asian fusion menu. For the evening, enjoy a glass of wine and some small bites at Black Mountain Wine House or Liar, Liar if you’re looking for some place a bit more ‘hip.’
