The Best Bedford-Stuyvesant Movers

Before the early 2000s, Bedford-Stuyvensant, AKA Bed-Stuy, was an incredibly dangerous Brooklyn neighborhood with high crime rates across the board. However, it has since become one of the most sought after neighborhoods due to its large collection of brownstones and Victorian homes. Despite the gentrification of the neighborhood, it still retains much of its culture while offering its residents plenty of amenities and a tight-knit community.

Cost of Living

Bed-Stuy rents have increased over the years so expect to pay around $3,000 for a one bedroom apartment. Of course, you might be able to find something for cheaper, but you better start looking early and often to find a deal.

Transportation

Bed-Stuy is a commuter’s dream. You have access to the A and C trains and, a little further away, access to the J, M, and Z lines. If subways aren’t your thing, hop on the Long Island Rail Road at Nostrand Avenue or take one of the many local or express trains to get around Brooklyn.

Crime and Safety

While Bed-Stuy has certainly gotten safer over the years though there are some rougher pockets most notably around Gates Avenue east of Bedford Avenue. Crime rates are also higher than the national average, but most of it is centered around property crimes.

What to Do and See

If you love walking around and admiring architecture, then Bed-Stuy is definitely the place for you. It has the largest collection of intact Victorian architecture in the United States with over 8,000 built before 1900. This area spans over 17 blocks and is known as the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District by both the US National Register of Historic Places and the US Historic District. Besides this area, there are several other historic districts that were designated by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission so you can truly enjoy history wherever you go in Bed-Stuy. As you’re walking you can enjoy the many murals dotting the neighborhood.

The neighborhood is more than just pretty buildings. It also has plenty to offer residents in the way of restaurants and nightlight. A quick walk down Broadway offers plenty of options from Spanish to Dominican fare. If you want grab a drink go to Skytown for some cocktails and a bit to eat or LunAtico for some live music and drinks. If you’re in the mood for something a bit more relaxed, check out Birdy’s for a classic dive bar experience.
