Our Top Astoria Moving Tips
Cost of Living
Compared to other parts of Queens, Astoria’s rents and home prices are a bit on the higher side. This should come as no surprise considering all of the amenities and the continued influx of renters from Manhattan. Expect rent to be around $2,800 for a one-bedroom apartment. If you want to own your place, then prepare to pay around $750,000 for a home. It might sound expensive to other parts of the country, but compared to the rest of NYC, these prices are reasonable.
Transportation
The reason so many people moved out to Astoria is because of its subway access. You can hop onto the N, W, M, and R trains which will get you to Midtown in about 15 minutes. If you fly often, you can take the M60 express to get you to LaGuardia Airport in less than 45 minutes. And, of course, there are plenty of bus routes that take you to different parts of Queens and into Manhattan. As of 2017, the area is also served by the NYC Ferry’s Astoria route.
Crime and Safety
Despite its bustling streets, Astoria is quite safe. Its overall crime rate is lower than Queens and NYC as a whole. Plus, it still has a tight knit community. As long as you look out for others, they will look out for you. In addition to a police precinct, the area is served by 4 fire stations and one hospital – Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens.
What to Do and See
Who says Queens doesn’t have anything interesting? Astoria is chock full of amenities. In fact, you don’t even need to head into Manhattan to experience the energy of NYC. Go to Astoria Park, a 60 acre greenspace along the East River, for a relaxing stroll along the water or bring your swimsuit and enjoy the Olympic-sized public outdoor pool. If you’re not a swimmer, there’s plenty to do as the park boasts tennis courts, track, bandstand, basketball courts, and more. Smaller parks are scattered around the neighborhood including Athens Square Park, which often hosts live music during the summer months.
Astoria is also a great place for foodies. The neighborhood has historically had a large Greek and Middle Eastern population though recently it has become more of a melting pot. Still, you can enjoy some authentic Greek cuisine at Amylos Tavern or Agnanti. If you’re more in the mood for Middle Eastern fare, then check out Merguez & Frites, an Algerian restaurant, or Zyara Restaurant for traditional Middle Eastern Fare. For dessert check out La Guli Pastry Shop, which has been serving Italian sweets in Astoria since 1937.
