Our Top Moving Tips

Our Top Red Hook Moving Tips

Cost of Living

Living in Red Hook is not cheap. Rents for a one-bedroom start at $2,500 and only go up from there. As we’ll discuss in the public transportation section below, there aren’t too many options so you might want to invest in a car, which means you’ll have to deal with gas, insurance, parking, and more on top of your rent. If you have the money, though, Red Hook is a great place to live for those who want something a bit out of the way while still having plenty of amenities.

Transportation

Getting out of Red Hook can be a challenge. There aren’t too many public transportation options though you can get to the F and G lines after a 10-minute walk. Bus service is also sparse with only a couple that get you to different parts of Brooklyn or Queens. IKEA provides a free shuttle and a free on-the-weekend ferries that many residents take advantage of. It’s also a very bike-friendly neighborhood so if you don’t want to invest in a car, then a bike might be your next best bet.

Crime and Safety

Red Hook is one of the safest neighborhoods in Brooklyn with crime rates below the NYC average. There does tend to be more crime around the IKEA due to the high amount of foot traffic. The neighborhood is served by both a police and fire department.

What to Do and See

The biggest reason Red Hook popped up on people’s radar is because of IKEA. However, there’s more to this neighborhood than a home furnishing store! There are some unique locations to visit including Red Hook Winery which provides tastings while overlooking the East River and NYC skyline. After that, go to the Kentler International Drawing Space and enjoy exhibitions of contemporary drawings and works on paper.

If you prefer to be outdoors, you’re in luck as Red Hook is home to the 58.5 acre Red Hook Park. It’s a popular location for the locals as it has a variety of facilities including handball courts, soccer and baseball fields, a track, and more. It also has a playground, making it a perfect place for your kids to make some local friends.
