Our Top East Village Moving Tips
Cost of Living
Manhattan itself is one of the most expensive places to live in the world, so it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the rents in the East Village are high. However, compared to other locations like the West Village or Upper West Side, rents tend to be a bit cheaper with the average around $2,500 for a one bedroom. There’s also more options for groceries now with the new Wegmans that opened in 2023.
Transportation
There’s plenty of ways to get around the East Village. Like the rest of Manhattan, it’s easy to get around the East Village by foot. Despite being one of the more popular neighborhoods, there’s not as many public transportation options, especially as you go past 1st avenue. If you’re willing to walk a bit, you can access various lines including the L train, 6 train, and B, D, F, and M. A little further west and you can go to Union Square on 14th street for access to the 4, 5, 6 and N, Q, R, and W trains. There’s also bus service that takes you to various locations on the east and west side.
Crime and Safety
The East Village might still have its rough edges, but crime rates have dropped by almost 80% since the 90s. The majority of crime happens around Tompkins Square Park as well as St. Mark’s Place, but these locations have seen crime drop in the past couple of years. With that said, pretty much all of the East Village is safe during the day and it’s really only dangerous late at night, so just make sure to get home at a reasonable hour!
What to Do and See
There’s no shortage of things to do in the East Village. Despite the loss of CBGB back in 2006, the East Village remains a mecca for local musicians and bands. You can catch a show at Webster Hall, Bowery Ballroom, or Mercury Lounge or check out one of the many bars and restaurants during open mic nights. If you prefer other types of performances, head over to the Nuyorican Poets Cafe for some poetry or hip-hop performances. There’s also some excellent Off Broadway shows at the Metropolitan Playhouse and the New York Theatre Workshop. For more culture, you can stop by the Ukrainian Museum to view a range of folk and fine art from Ukraine. Or just wander into one of the many community gardens in the East Village. Around 10 percent of NYC’s communicate gardens are located in the East Village and Lower East Side!
When it comes to eating out and nightlife, the East Village has you covered. You can stroll through St. Mark’s place for some great Asian snacks and restaurants including Yakitori Taisho – a Japanese-style grilled meat restaurant. Then head over to McSorley’s Old Ale House, the oldest Irish saloon in NYC and try either their light or dark beer. If you prefer some more Eastern European food, check out Veselka, a 24-hour diner that serves some of the best pierogies in NYC.
