Our Top Downtown Jersey City Moving Tips
Cost of Living
Downtown Jersey City has gotten more expensive over the years due to greater demand. Average rents hover around $2,400 for a one-bedroom, which isn’t too different from some Manhattan neighborhoods. However, you do get more hang for buck. If you want to buy, expect to pay almost $900,000!
Transportation
Downtown Jersey City provides plenty of public transportation options from the PATH train to NJ Light Rail options so you can easily get to NYC or other areas of New Jersey. You can also hop on a bus or ferry if you prefer other modes of transportation. And, of course, Downtown Jersey City is incredibly walkable so it’s easy to get around.
Crime and Safety
Downtown Jersey City is quite safe with crime rates below the national average. It’s incredibly safe during the day and the well-lit streets make it much safer at night than some other Jersey City neighborhoods. Even though it’s safe you should always be aware of your surroundings as a low crime rate doesn’t mean no crime!
What to Do and See
Hailed as “Wall Street West” Downtown Jersey City needs to have plenty of amenities to keep its high income residents happy! As such, there’s no shortage of fun stuff to do. The Historic Downtown Special Improvement District has helped develop events like farmers market during the spring and summer months, street fairs, free concerts, and restaurant fest to help promote local businesses. Explore Grove Street and Newark Avenue for a variety of different restaurants and stores. Or go to Newport to check out the Newport Centre shopping mall.
There’s a lot of historical and noteworthy locations to check out in Downtown Jersey City with the most famous being the huge Colgate clock, which was built in 1924. Other favorite places that residents enjoy visiting include Van Vorst Park, a formal park that has a similar vibe to NYC’s Washington Square Park. Renovated in 1999, this park now includes more features including a fountain, gazebo, playground, and more trees. There’s also Hamilton Park, a 5-acre park that offers some of the most breathtaking views of the NYC skyline.
