Our Top Bayside Moving Tips
Cost of Living
Compared to the rest of the United States, Bayside has one of the most expensive housing markets despite having a large amount of free-standing homes. You can expect to pay an average of $600,000 for a home. The rental market isn’t much better with one bedroom apartments going for around $2,500. Still, you do get a much larger apartment when compared to similarly priced apartments in Manhattan or even the popular areas in Brooklyn.
Transportation
One of the big reasons why Bayside remains a fairly suburban neighborhood is because there isn’t much in the way of public transportation. There’s no subway line that reaches this neighborhood, though you can hop on the Long Island Railroad at Bayside station which is an express station. You can also catch some local and express buses. Most residents own a car, though and with easy access to the Clearview Expressway, Long Island Expressway, and Cross Island Parkway, you can drive around fairly easily.
Crime and Safety
Bayside is incredibly safe with the lowest violent crime rates in any area of NYC. Crime rates in general are lower than the NYC average, mostly due to the fact that the residents are either families or retiremed individuals.
What to Do and See
While Bayside might be a mostly residential area, it does offer plenty of amenities for its residents, especially in the nature department. There’s Fort Totten Park, a park building during the Civil War to guard the entrance to New York Harbor. You can take a tour of the fortress or simply walk around and admire the historical buildings in the area. During the summer, the park opens up the public pool. Like boating? Head to Bayside Marina and rent a boat or just enjoy the docks.
After a nice stroll along the water, check out the many restaurants along Bell Blvd. There’s plenty of options to choose from including some great Italian at Trattoria 35 or some Cajun food at Bourbon Street. Round the night out with some dessert at The French Workshop for some pastries or Martha’s Country Bakery for classic desserts.
