Our Top Washington Heights Moving Tips
Cost of Living
Compared to some of the more popular neighborhoods in Manhattan, Washington Heights is still relatively affordable with one-bedroom apartments ranging around $2,500. Many of the homes here are also rent-stabilized so you can rest easy knowing rents won’t increase above a certain percentage when you renew.
Transportation
Getting around is easy in Washington Heights. You have access to the 1, A, and C trains as well as multiple local and express routes. You also have access to the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal, which provides service to North Jersey, Paterson, and Jersey City as well as the Northeastern Corridor and upstate New York.
Crime and Safety
Washington Heights crime has dropped significantly since the beginning of the 21st century with rates slightly higher than the city overall. Violent crime is very low with the majority of crime centered around grand larceny and inter-gang violence. The area has two police departments and three fire departments
What to Do and See
There’s no shortage of green space in Washington Heights. The neighborhood is home to the 184-acre Fort Washington Park which runs from 155th street to Dyckman Street along the Hudson River. You can enjoy the beautiful views of the water and then stop by Inspiration Point if you get tired. Just below the George Washington Bridge is the Little Red Lighthouse which, true to its name, is a bright red color! To the east is Highbridge Park, a 160-acre park that features several landmarks including NYC’s oldest standing bridge High Bridge, and Highbridge tower, a 200-feet water tower that used to hold 47,000 gallons of water that was fed by the Croton Aqueduct. Highbridge Park is also home to NYC’s first mountain bike course, skate park, and more!
Outside of hanging out in the parks, there’s plenty of other activities to enjoy. Walk along 181st street and check out the various shops and boutiques. One place of interest to visit is the Word Up Community Bookshop, a volunteer-run bookstore that not only sells books but offers workshops, readings, and cultural events. For foodies, there are plenty of options but definitely go to Tampopo Ramen for an authentic bowl of Ramen or go to Malecon for some delicious Dominican cuisine.
