Our Top West Hoboken Moving Tips
Cost of Living
Living in West Hoboken is considerably cheaper than if you decided to live in the Downtown area or even Castle Point. Average rent for a one-bedroom is around $2,000 though you might be able to find something cheaper. Plus, since you’re further away from the nightlife and restaurants, you might end up saving money since you won’t be going out as much.
Transportation
Where West Hoboken starts is a matter of some debate, but most people consider the neighborhood starts to the west of Washington Street. If you do move out here, be forewarned that it will be a bit of a trek to access the PATH or NJ Transit. There are some buses that go through this neighborhood, but you might want to invest in another mode of transportation such as a bike. Cars aren’t necessary since even West Hoboken is walkable and, since it’s a more residential area, it can be hard to find a parking spot.
Crime and Safety
West Hoboken tends to have slightly higher crime rates than the rest of Hoboken, but still considerably less than New Jersey as a whole. The high crime rate is mostly due to the fact that the Western side has more poverty and public housing. It’s still fairly safe though, just be alert if you happen to be coming home late at night.
What to Do and See
In 2023 Hoboken opened up the ReslienCity Park, a 5-acre public space with amenities located at 13th and Madison. The park not only serves as a recreational space but also as a stormwater detention location to prevent flooding. Its sister park, the 1-acre Southwest Park located between New York Avenue and Peterson Avenue, is also slated to expand its footprint by another acre for additional stormwater detention and more greenspace. Regardless of which one you visit, you can enjoy some beautiful greenery, dog parks, and even some performances!
While most of the bars and restaurants are located in the Downtown area, there are still some tasty eats in West Hoboken including family run restaurant Zack’s. You can also grab some delicious ice cream at Thomas Ice Cream cafe.
