Our Top Times Square Moving Tips
Cost of Living
Living in Times Square isn’t cheap. You’re located in the center of Manhattan and, as you would expect, rent prices reflect that. Expect to pay at least $5,000 for a one-bedroom apartment though you might be able to find cheaper places if you look hard enough.
Transportation
Getting to and from Times Square is a breeze as the area serves as a transportation hub. You can grab almost every line here including the 1, 2, 3, 5, N, Q, R and W train. If you want to travel along the east side of Manhattan, take the shuttle to Grand Central for access to the 4, 5, and 6 lines. Want to get out of the city? Head to the Port Authority Bus Terminal for buses to New Jersey or head a bit further south to Penn Station for access to Amtrak, NJ Transit, and the Long Island Rail Road.
Crime and Safety
Due to being a tourist attraction, Times Square tends to have higher crime than other parts of Manhattan with most of it being robberies. With that said, the area is significantly safer than it was in the 90s with low incidences of violent crime. Just make sure you’re aware of your surroundings and keep a close eye on your wallet and purse.
What to Do and See
Times Square is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world drawing around 50 million visitors every year and for good reason. It’s the hub for Broadway theater where you can see world class musicals and plays. It also boasts plenty of other attractions including Times Square Studios where Good Morning America broadcasts live. And, of course, it’s the site of the New Year’s Eve ball drop which attractions millions of visitors. Want to see celebrities? Check out Madame Tussauds wax museum for their wax replicas.
While there are plenty of restaurants in Times Square, not all of them are worth the price. You should, of course, go to Junior’s Restaurant at least once to try their menu and their classic New York style cheesecake. If you’re in the mood for some seafood, check out Blue Fin for some great bites and specialty cocktails. Or head over to Parker & Quinn located in the Refinery Hotel for a vintage vibe. You can also just walk around the area and check out a variety of shops including M&M’s World, the Disney Store, Tamashii Nations if you’re a fan of manga and anime collectibles, and more. There’s almost too many places to shop and eat that it can be overwhelming. But if you want to experience the center of Manhattan, there’s no better place than Times Square.
