Cost of Living

Compared to Manhattan, Parkchester might be more affordable, but compared to other parts of the Bronx, it’s a bit on the higher side. Average one-bedroom apartments are around $2,000. Want to buy? You can expect to pay an average of $400,000 for a home, but there generally aren’t too many actual homes for sale.

Transportation

Located on the eastern part of the Bronx, Parkchester is served by the 6 train as well as several buses that will take you to various parts of the Bronx and Manhattan. As you might expect, the subways are crowded during rush hour commutes, so it might be worth your time to have a car. You can easily get hop onto I-95 as it passes right at the southwestern edge of this Bronx neighborhood.

Crime and Safety

Compared to the rest of NYC, Parkchester tends to have a higher crime rate. With that said, it is continuously getting safer and crime rates continue to fall. Parkchester is served by one police station as well as the Parkchester PD, which is a privately owned and operated security force. It also has one fire department.

What to Do and See

It might be small, but there’s some excellent shopping and food options available in Parkchester. The most famous spot, and NYC landmark, is the Macy’s which has been in operation since 1941 and the second oldest Macy’s behind the flagship on 34th street. When it comes to food, there are a a few delicious spots including Hook and Reel, a Cajun restaurant, and Step In, a long-standing Bronx staple that serves standard but delicious pub food.

When it comes to green spaces, Parkchester might not house the Botanical Gardens or any major parks, but there are a few smaller parks that are perfect for a quick break from the concrete jungle. The most popular is Parkchester Oval, which is located in the heart of this Bronx neighborhood. On top of green space, during the summer the park also hosts free weekly concerts. There’s also Unionport Parkchester Port, which many residents visit during various holidays for the decorations and there’s Parkchester North Condominium Park, which includes various courts and fields.
