Our Top Moving Tips

Our Top Jackson Heights Moving Tips

Cost of Living

While Jackson Heights might not be a hidden gem any longer, rents still manage to be well below the NYC average. You can snag yourself a one-bedroom for around $2,300 though you might be able to find some cheaper options. It’s also still somewhat affordable to buy with apartments and condos going for around $400,000. When it comes to everything else, you can expect to pay a lower premium for things like groceries, most notably ethnic/specialty groceries.

Transportation

You can hop on the 7, E, F, M, and R lines to get you to Midtown in under 30 minutes. There are also several bus lines that will take you to other neighborhoods in Queens and you can even catch a bus that will take you directly to LaGuardia airport.

Crime and Safety

It might be crowded, but Jackson Heights is incredibly safe with crime rates below the city average. This is a huge change from the late 20th century when Jackson Heights used to be a much more dangerous neighborhood. Since the 1990s, crimes have decreased 85%.

What to Do and See

There’s so much to do and see in Jackson Heights, it will be impossible to list everything. However, the biggest draw, especially if you’re a foodie, are all the different restaurants. You can pretty much grab cuisine from all over the world, but most notably South American and Asian flavors. Go to the Queensboro if you’re looking for some more traditional American fare. Otherwise, head over to Pimpollo for some tasty Colombian eats or Lhasa Liang Feng for some Tibetan food. If you’re just in the mood for some baked goods, check out Fay Da for Chinese sweets and breads. There’s also a thriving food cart scene especially along Junction Blvd 7 train stop. Check out Guatita for some traditional Ecuadorian tripe stew!

There’s more to do than just eat in Jackson Heights. It’s also a historic neighborhood and was designated a historic district back in 1993 as it was one of the first and biggest planned co-op and garden communities in the United States. You can walk around the neighborhood to enjoy the many Tudor-style homes and also check out the potential birthplace of the game Scrabble. There are several small gardens scattered around the neighborhood that you can enjoy or you can take the 7 out to Flushing Meadows Corona Park if you want to enjoy some more greenspace.
