Our Top Allerton Moving Tips
Cost of Living
NYC might not be cheap, but some places are more affordable than others. Allerton is one of those places. Average rent for a one-bedroom hovers around $1,400 though you might be able to find more affordable places. Groceries and other expenses are also slightly cheaper here than other parts of NYC.
Transportation
You have excellent public transportation options in Allerton. You can catch the 2 or 5 trains at multiple stops. Or hop on one of the many buses that will take you to different parts of the Bronx. There’s also the Bee-Line which runs to Westchester.
Crime and Safety
Allerton’s overall crime rates are slightly higher than the rest of NYC, though property crimes are actually lower than the national average. Always be alert and avoid walking around late at night. The area is served by a police department and fire department.
What to Do and See
There’s quite a lot to do and see in Allerton, but the biggest draw is the Bronx Zoo and New York Botanical Garden. If you end up moving to the area, make sure you get your season passes so you can take advantage of these locations. If you want to take a long walk, enjoy Pelham Parkway, which you can follow to the northeast to Baychester or southeast to Pelham Bay.
If you prefer shopping or eating out there are plenty of options. Check out El Imperial for some delicious Dominican food or go to Estrellita Poblana II for some tasty Mexican. If you walk along Allerton Avenue you’ll find plenty of other small restaurants and shops to choose from. And don’t forget to sample all of the local delis so you can find the perfect hero sandwich and bacon, egg, and cheese.
