Named after a former cove of the East River, Turtle Bay is located on the east side of Midtown Manhattan ranging from East 43rd to 53rd street. This mixed use neighborhood includes beautiful parks and green spaces as well as a variety of dining options from upscale restaurants to small cafes.

Our Top Moving Tips

Our Top Turtle Bay Moving Tips

Cost of Living

As one of the most sought after neighborhoods in NYC, living in Turtle Bay isn’t cheap. The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment is about $3,500 though you might be able to find something cheaper if you look hard enough.

Transportation

Located on the east side of Midtown, you have access to the 4, 5, 6 train that takes you down Lexington/4th Avenue. You can also hop on the shuttle train which will take you to Times Square for the 1, 2, and 3 train. If you want to get out of the city, grab the Metro North at Grand Central Station.

Crime and Safety

Turtle Bay is relatively safe with low rates of assaults and violent crime. The area does suffer from higher than average property crime, but most of the crime is directed towards retail stores in the area. Still, you should always be aware of your surroundings especially at major hubs like Grand Central.

What to Do and See

Walking around Turtle Bay is like walking through a slice of history. Several sites have been designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservations Commission and/or listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This includes several institutional buildings including the Ford Foundation Building, the headquarters of the Japan Society, the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, and more. Of course, there’s also the Chrysler Building, which once was the first skyscraper in the world for about 11 months in the 1930s.

Even if you’re not a history or architecture buff, there’s still plenty to do in the area. For foodies, you’ll want to stop by Inside Park for a unique dining experience as the restaurant is located in the former Great Hall of a church. If you want to impress your date, go to Four Twenty Five, a Jean-Georges Restaurant for an amazing experience – though you’ll definitely need to make reservations in advance. And if you want a little cultural experience, head over to Japan Society and catch one of their programs and events for a taste of Japanese culture.
