Our Top Moving Tips

Our Top Downtown Brooklyn Moving Tips

Cost of Living

Downtown Brooklyn has seen an explosion of growth since 2004, with more businesses and more people moving in. As such, costs have gone up, with the average rental costs sitting at around $4,000. Buying isn’t much better with houses going for around $1.2 million. Still, the convenience can certainly outweigh the costs, especially if you manage to find a job in the area.

Transportation

As one of the central transportation hubs in NYC, you can hop on pretty much every train and easily get to Lower Manhattan in less than 15 minutes. The area is serviced by the A, C, F, R, 2, 3, 4, and 5 trains. There are also several buses that will take you to different parts of Brooklyn and Queens.

Crime and Safety

Downtown Brooklyn has become much safer than it was in the late 90s and early aughts, but much like any place with a high population density, you can’t get rid of crime completely. Still, the area is about as safe as the rest of NYC, with fairly low rates of violent crime. It’s served by two police departments and four fire departments.

What to Do and See

There’s no shortage of things to do and see in Downtown Brooklyn. If you’re into the performing arts, there’s no better place to go than the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) where you can enjoy various forms of music, dance, opera, and film. Movie buffs can head over to the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema for some first-run, indie, and foreign films while enjoying some cocktails and delicious bites. For a lovely day or evening stroll, head on over to Brooklyn Bridge Park and enjoy stunning views of the Lower Manhattan skyline and the East River.

For all you foodies, Downtown Brooklyn is the place to be. Head on over to the Dekalb Market Hall for a veritable feast of options, including the famous Katz’s Delicatessen. Or, if you prefer something sweet, head to Junior’s for some famous New York cheesecake. There are, of course, options outside of the hall, including Gage & Tollner, a staple of the neighborhood since 1879.
