Cost of Living
While it might have a lot of major attractions, living in Coney Island is pretty affordable. One bedrooms average around $2,500 a month, though prices vary based on location. When it comes to buying, you might be able to find a whole house for under $800,000!
Transportation
Getting to and from Coney Island is a breeze. You have access to the D, F, N, and Q line,s which will take you to other parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan. There are also plenty of bus routes that will connect you to neighboring locations. And, of course, there are plenty of bike lanes so you can enjoy a ride while enjoying the ocean air.
Crime and Safety
Due to its popularity with tourists, Coney Island does have a slightly higher crime rate than the rest of NYC. However, actual violent crimes are less than that of the city as a whole with crime rates continuing to decrease through the years. The area is served by two firehouses.
What to Do and See
If you’re in Coney Island, you of course have to visit Luna Park at least once. While a lot of the old rides have shut down, there are still plenty of attractions to check out. Every year, the area hosts the Mermaid Parade, the nation’s largest art parade, in late June. Of course, once you’ve checked out these two attractions, there’s no better way to spend a summer day than on the beach. As one of the few beaches accessible by public transportation, you should plan ahead if you plan on trying to find a good spot on the sand. Enjoy a relaxing walk along the boardwalk and stop into the New York Aquarium, the oldest continually operating aquarium in the United States.
Take a bite out of history and visit the Original Nathan’s for some of the best hot dogs you’ll find in NYC. The location also hosts the annual hot dog eating contest, which you can enter at your own risk. Got a sweet tooth? Head over to Williams Candy for some candy apples and cotton candy. Then grab yourself a cold beer at the Coney Island Brewery. For some live theater, check out the Coney Island Amphitheater for some free outdoor fun.
